
Welcome to Cakes and Coriander!
We’re Steve and Barbara, the husband-and-wife team behind Cakes and Coriander. Steve is the mastermind, chef, writer, grocery shopper, recipe tester, web designer, and photographer, while Barbara is the editor-in-chief, social media guru, and the reason this blog is (mostly) grammatically correct! Together, we bring you delicious, thoughtfully developed, gluten-free recipes—tested and approved by our family, friends, and a wonderful community of taste-testers.
Why Cakes and Coriander?
In mid-2022, Steve started this cooking blog with two simple but important criteria:
1️⃣ The food must be delicious. Some recipes are quick and easy, while others are more involved and require a longer ingredient list—but no matter what, taste always comes first.
2️⃣ Every recipe is gluten-free. While gluten-free options have come a long way, there’s still a gap in the market for truly amazing gluten-free food. Whether naturally or intentionally gluten-free, our recipes are crafted to be just as good—if not better—than their wheat-filled counterparts.
How We Got Here
Cakes and Coriander originally began as a collaboration between Steve and his sister, Hillary. If you notice a softer writing style in older posts, those are likely hers! As life got busier, Hillary stepped away to focus on her growing family, but we hope to see her back for guest appearances in the future.
In 2021, we moved our family from Chicago to the Atlanta area—partly for Barbara’s job, partly to escape the cold. That shift gave Steve the opportunity to leave his commercial real estate career and fully dedicate himself to this blog, a project fueled by years of encouragement from family and friends. (Shoutout to Aunt Crissy and Uncle Scott of The Café Sucre Farine for the final push!)
Wearing Too Many Hats to Count
Running Cakes and Coriander has been an adventure in cooking, writing, photography, and web design. Steve has learned a lot (like the importance of actually documenting recipes instead of relying on memory), and there’s always more to figure out. Barbara keeps everything organized, polished, and social, making sure our content reaches all the right places.
We love connecting with readers, so if you ever have comments, questions, or spot an error, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Why Gluten-Free?
Gluten-free living can seem intimidating at first, especially when it comes to baking—but trust us, it doesn’t have to be. We’ve been gluten-free since 2016, when a dietitian suggested an elimination diet to help Barbara with ongoing brain fog and fatigue. Turns out, gluten was the culprit, and we haven’t looked back since. (Okay, Steve might occasionally cheat with a slice of Costco pizza, but overall, we both feel so much better without gluten.)
